Pumpkin's Dallas Baby Shower...

This past weekend, we had our first baby shower in Dallas! It was lots of fun! We did some traditional games, like "guess the chocolate bar in the diaper" and "clothespin game" - where you can't say baby, pregnancy or cute! Amy also make a cute bingo game (kinda like at our wedding shower). She also asked the guests to bring a pack of diapers or wipes, and they were entered into a drawing for a cute basket (and we got lots of diapers and wipes! yea!).

It was hosted by 3 great friends from my time in Aggieland, Traci, Amy, and Bernice.

Both grandmothers also made it to the party (my mom on the left, Ry's on the right). Amy was sweet to give them each a present - a grandmother's brag book!

Also had our token baby at the shower (hi Andrew).

And a few of us Aggies (check out those cool rings!).

And our token Longhorn. Thanks for being such a good sport Dawn.

We stayed the night with my friend Amy and her family. Here I am with her daughters Ashleigh and Michelle, our goddaughter. Thanks everyone for such a great weekend!! Pumpkin's room is getting nicely stocked!

got the GD...

Well, looks like it is confirmed that I have Gestational Diabetes. They test you for this around your 28th week of pregnancy.

According to the American Diabetes Association:
Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood sugar (glucose) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women - about 135,000 cases of gestational diabetes in the United States each year.

We don't know what causes gestational diabetes, but we have some clues. The placenta supports the baby as it grows. Hormones from the placenta help the baby develop. But these hormones also block the action of the mother's insulin in her body. This problem is called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes it hard for the mother's body to use insulin. She may need up to three times as much insulin.

Gestational diabetes starts when your body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. Without enough insulin, glucose cannot leave the blood and be changed to energy. Glucose builds up in the blood to high levels. This is called hyperglycemia.

Luckily, my levels weren't too high, so it looks like I may be able to deal with this through diet. I do have to check my levels 4 times a day with this handy device.

As well as document what I eat, I have to eat 6 smaller meals (what my doc has been telling me all along), and limit my carbs. My wonderful husband is doing this with me - so hopefully we will both be healthier for the process. If this is what I need to do to have a healthy baby, I can do it!

We are also off to Big D this weekend for my first baby shower! Soooo excited to see my friends and family up there!

PS - Thanks for all the suggestions, comments and prayers! We really appreciate it!

High...

Looks like my glucose levels are high, so I probably have gestational diabetes. I am meeting with a counselor this week for management.

If you could say a little prayer for us, it would really mean a lot. I'm a little worried about it all...

Any advice, prayers, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

30 weeks...

TODAY!! Whoop!

Also, if you could say a little prayer for me and pumpkin tomorrow. I failed the glucose test, so we've been on a restricted diet these past 3 days, and go in for a 3 hour glucose test tomorrow. I don't really want to have gestational diabetes, but if that does happen, we want to do what is best for me and pumpkin. Will keep y'all (stalker and blog posters) updated!

the nursery transformation...

Okay, well it started like this...

And then my painters (my sister and cousins) came for spring break (thanks Tessa, Monica, Allison and Corey)...

And we celebrated Easter by putting up the chair rail (all that hard work Justin)...

And the in-law's came and helped touch up the place...

And now it is home to the crib! Whoop!

Ry is still finishing the closet, so I'll post those when he is done. Then we will move the furniture back in. Planning to order the rocker/glider this week! So, check back for the final product!

my former roomie...

This past weekend I made a short jaunt to Aggieland - Whoop! I saw one of my former roomies, Mary (who married one of my other former roomies Rich). Well, Mary is expecting baby #3, little William! He will join his brothers Richie and Andrew. Only fitting that we should take a photo of our increasing tummies! And the crazy thing is, we are due just 3 weeks apart! How great! Happy gestating Mary! Can't wait for our little ones to meet!!

What's in a name...

My friend Amber, who is coming to the end of her pregnancy, posted about names for her baby. She asked her readers to post how they got their names and/or decided on the names for their children. Was it after family, saints, or just liking the name? I thought it was a very interesting discussion so I'm challenging you, my loyal readers, to comment! And I know, I have some blog stalkers - y'all can post too!

Here is some background on my name:
As many of y'all may know, I was named Alexis Marie. The names they had thought of before going to the hospital was Clare (or Mark if I was a boy). I've been told I am no Clare. The only problem they had was my maternal grandparents lived in South America, where Alexis was a male name. They were not very happy that their first grandchild (and a girl) was named a "boy" name. Marie was after my mom Maria. I just loved my name, and loved having a good nickname too - Lexy.

I'll let Ry post on how he got his name! I look forward to reading your postings!!

Also, to keep everyone in suspense, we are not revealing the gender (since we don't know) or our names (since we still can't decide). We are taking suggestions...

off to the beach...

We are off for a few days a the beach! Ry was asking pumpkin this morning if he/she was ready for his first trip! Hopefully momma is - it is a long car ride! Should be fun also to see Charlie the dog interact with the ocean. Whoop - babymoon part 2 (or would it be 3...)

After 18 weeks of progesterone shots, it looks like I am *finally* in the correct range! No more shots!! Whoop! Good job pumpkin!!

98 days...

Well, today is the day! 98 days to my due date from Dr. Love which is June 19 (although the 20 week ultrasound pushed it to June 23). I can't believe it has gone soo fast!! Today I move into my 3rd trimester. So much to get done!

This week we've had a house full of college girls. 3 of my cousins (Monica, Allison and Corey) and my sister Tessa have been here. They painted the baby's room and it is beautiful! I will totally think of them every time I go in the room.

AND My parents come in this weekend, so we will have fuller house this weekend! But the house is filled with love and laughter - it has been wonderful!

pregnancy musings...

This last week pumpkin has developed a new habit - waking me up at night. Sometime between 2-4 am I am woken by his/her kicking. I try to go back to sleep, but usually am awake at least an hour, up to 4 hours.

This has given me time to ponder my pregnancy. We have been wanting to expand our family for a few years now. And with 3 miscarriages, hormonal problems and chromosomal issues, it has been quite a roller coaster.

Due to that, it was hard for the first several weeks for me to actually believe I was pregnant. I didn't even start my pregnancy book until I was 14 weeks pregnant. Through all this time, though, I feel we have been soo loved and comforted. So many have lifted us up in prayer, I know that is why things have been going so well.

And things have. Yet, in the middle of the night you still wonder. Are we doing the right thing? Will I be a good mom? Will I be able to provide for my child? Can I be as good of a mom as my mom was for me?

And then I remember that I have a wonderful network - a super husband, wonderful family, friends, and those who lurk this blog :-)

But what if I didn't? What if I had no one? What if I had no supportive husband who makes dinner when I can't stand the smell of food? Or wonderful friends offering to throw me not one but two baby showers? How hard would this be? And so many women have to go through this each day.

So as I laid in bed last night, trying to go back to sleep, I grabbed Ry's hand. I knew everything would be just fine. We will do the best we can for all our children - that is what we have been doing and continue to do.

And when I get discouraged, I will offer it up for those women who do this alone. That they will be comforted by His love, and be given the strength to persevere.

We have a theme!!

Yea! We have a theme for pumpkin's room! We found it about a week ago when my mom was visiting. Has such beautiful colors and reminds us of New Zealand!

My sister and 3 of my cousins are coming this weekend to visit us for a week for their spring break. Oh to have spring break again... I thought a good project for them would be to paint the baby's room! Will post some before and after's in the coming weeks!

10 pounds!!!

I have now officially put on 10 pounds with this pregnancy!! Seems like my double stuff oreo diet has worked! Only thing is that I probably can't do it anymore :-(

My doc appointment went well - 24 weeks!! Baby is growing and has a healthy heartbeat. Now to other baby stuff - to decide on a pediatrician, to circumcise or not (have to research, since we are not finding out), finalizing the baby room colors, cloth diapering, register, etc.!! I guess this is why God gives you 9 months - there is lots to be done! I always wondered this while I was dealing with our infertility - I wanted a baby now! But, in going through all this, I'm glad to have 16 more weeks (or less!!).\

Yesterday Ry and I had a romantic dinner at the Melting Pot. We love going out for fondue! And so did pumpkin - around 4 am he/she woke me up kicking!! yes, kicking!! seems like he/she likes the chocolate fondue.

Off to Dallas this weekend - work stuff and to see our god daughter. Ry will stay here - I was going to make him a honey-do list, but I think he has it covered.

living in the 'burbs...

As many of y'all know, our house backs up to a dead-end road. When the weather is nice, people like to park back there and it creeps me out!!

Yesterday it happened again! I guess because it was a nice night. A pick-up pulled behind, and fixed it so the front was facing our home (and the back the field behind our house) - around 10 pm. Then all lights went off. I told Ry and he went downstairs. Turned on our light (there is no light on the street), and tried to look over the fence. No avail, they wouldn't leave.

So, I used my worried voice and called the dispatcher's office. Told them a creepy car was behind the house, and had been there at least 10 minutes. Within 5 minutes 2 sheriff's cars pulled up - lights in force! Eventually one went away, and we could see the cop talking to one person, a man. We couldn't see the other until she stood up in the bed of the truck. She was putting on her clothes!!! Yes, people were naked behind my house!! And I gave them time to "get in the mood" before I called the cops!

Guess I'm one of those evil suburban homeowner's now... Ry said if we had night video equipment we could have made lots of money on this experience. I just don't want creepy people behind my house! Find another unlit road!! And beware, this homeowner will call the cops!

Babymoon part 2 - DC

Well, DC was a little different from NYC...

We got to DC on Thursday, 2/7. Ry wasn't feeling well, when we got to our friend Pam's home, his temperature was 102.8! She made him some chicken soup and he was in bed by 7 pm.

The next day we went to an urgent care clinic and found out that Ry had walking pneumonia!! He had to get his first IV ever!! I asked the doc if we should head home, but he said Ry was too sick to travel!!!

Luckily we were staying the next few days at a hotel. Pam graciously brought us over dinner that night!! Ry just rested.

Saturday, Pam, her girls and I went to Arlington Cemetery. Wow, what an amazing place. We meandered through it, and were able to see the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier. Here is a photo of Pam's girls Rachael and Allison, and me at the pavilion.

Sunday we went to Mass with Pam and family. Afterwards we took the Metro into DC, and saw our friends Erin and Joe. Joe gave us a driving tour of DC, but we didn't get out because it was super cold and windy. We did get out at the Iwo Jima Memorial, and it felt like the teens! From there you can also see the Washington Memorial.

We then headed back for a restful evening.

Monday we got to see some Smithsonian museums - Air & Space and Natural History. We had fun exploring both, and I just loved seeing the Hope Diamond at Natural History. We wanted to go to American History, but it is closed until the summer. They did have some items on display at Air & Space - C3PO, R2D2, Dorothy's red slippers, etc. At least we saw the highlights.

Tuesday we did our Capital events. We went on a tour of the White House with Pam and her girls. We saw about 6 rooms. It was self-guided but cool to actually be in the White House. Then we had a tour of the Capital. We went with a staffer from our US Rep's office - Mike McCaul. We were the only ones on the tour! It was great - took over 2 hours!! A highlight of our trip!!

Tuesday night an ice storm hit the area. People were stuck on the roads 4 - 9 hours!! We actually got out of our taxi 1/2 a block from our hotel because it was costing too much money staying parked!

Wednesday we headed back. We saw Pam and Allison for lunch. It was soo great to see her, and spend time with her beautiful family!!

One of the funniest signs was at the Metro! Thought y'all would get a kick from it - don't have any of these in Texas!!

Ry is finally doing better. He was on antibiotics for 10 days, and I have not gotten sick! I tell Ry it is because I got the St. Blaise blessing at Mass on Feb. 3, and he decided not to do it. Don't think he'll miss that one!

We'll post some more photos on our flickr account!! Probably this weekend!

Babymoon - NYC

Well, we had a wonderful time in NYC! Whoop!

We flew into DC, and then took the train to Penn Station in NYC. From there we hiked up about 20 blocks to the convent where we were staying, Centro Maria.

Friday, 2/1 was our first full day. We went to the Met and that night I had dinner with 2 of my cousins, Tristan and Chris. I hadn't seen them in awhile and we had a nice, 3 hour dinner!

Saturday was our day full of the Sisters for Life. Our friend, Sr. Mary Clare, decided to postpone her vows, but a few us of Aggie Catholics decided to go up anyways. There was a beautiful Mass for the 2 other sisters who took their vows, and then a special family dinner that evening.

We finished that evening going to the Catholic Underground, hosted by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. What an amazing time and great music. On our way back we came with some girls from Centro Maria, and here is Times Square in the background.

Sunday we headed to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Thanks Laurie for recommending the audio tour! It was great and we had fun exploring. It was probably the best day weather wise, and we had a great time!!

Monday we were able to catch up with a friend of ours Jeff who was also visiting NYC. We did the NBC Studios tour, and checked out Rockafeller Center.

We were also able to be a part of the David Letterman show audience. The funny thing was that they were shooting the Tuesday episode, so we had to pretend we had voted in super Tuesday, went to the parade, etc.

Tuesday we participated in the Giants ticker tape parade. The last one was prior to 9/11, It was fun participating, and to see what they think is ticker tape - shredded paper, shredded newspaper, whole sheets of paper, rolls of toilet paper, etc.

We also went to the UN, and saw a broadway show - Curtains with David Hyde Pierce.

Wednesday we went to the American Museum of Natural History. That night I hung out with my cousin Tristan again, since Ry wasn't feeling well. Since it was Ash Wednesday, I got my ashes at St. Patrick's Cathedral! Beautiful!!

Check back tomorrow for more on DC...

We are back, safe and sound!!

Will post an update on what we did this weekend. It was an interesting trip, a little more excitement than we were planning for. That should be a good teaser to have you come back :-)

Pumpkin is doing well. Has learned how to kick mommy, and I'm feeling our little one squirm lots more now. Very exciting!!

david letterman...

Check out David Letterman on Monday!! We got tickets to be in the audience!! whoop!

20 weeks old!!

Just wanted to post our most recent photo of pumpkin. Had the 20 week ultrasound today and all is going well! Pumpkin is weighing in at a helfty 12 ounces, and is perfectly on track!! yea!!

You can even see in this photo of pumpkin's perfect foot - even the toes! Didn't really feel him/her kicking me, but I know that will start soon!!

We will be going to see Dr. Love this afternoon, and then ready to head out on our babymoon!! NYC and DC, here we come!!

Monday, January 28, 2008

a great weekend!!

What a great weekend we had! Got to go to a private reception with Dr. Alveda King, niece of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. We had a good time meeting her. She also did a a great job at the Texas Rally for Life. All went well, and God sure provided on the beautiful weather. I was even listening to the radio this morning and the were talking about it!

And I think the oreos and ice cream is working - putting on a few more pounds. This has been one of my worries through this pregnancy. I'm almost halfway there (19 1/2 weeks) and have only put on a few. We'll see Wednesday how well I've done - we have the big ultrasound and prenatal appt. Watch for pics!!

Last night it happened. Everyone told me it would. I just hadn't felt it. The butterflies came!! Yes, that is what it feel like to have your baby kick! Little pumpkin was all moving around when I was trying to go to sleep. I woke up Ry to tell him and he tried to see if he could feel it too. That may take a few weeks until he can feel it. I'm very excited - not sure how I slept last night!

Lastly, we are off to our babymoon to NYC and DC this week. Post or email me any suggestions you have up there - this is our first real visit!

Happy Birthday hubby!

Just wanted to wish my dear husband a wonderful 32nd birthday and upcoming year! I have truly enjoyed these last 9 1/2 years getting to know the awesome man that you are! You continue to surprise and amaze me. May this year be filled with new adventures, new experiences and a true sense of contentment!

We celebrated tonight by going out for Greek food. yum! And this weekend Ry's parents came to help us install a beautiful new back door, as well as celebrate at Chuy's. Always revolving around food...

Happy New Year!!

Well, we are finally back and recovered from our ventures up and down I-35 - to see Ry's and my family! It was a great time away, but glad to be home.

Had my 16 week appt. today! Baby is doing great - 140 beats a minute!! The nurse even said he/she was kicking due to the sounds we were hearing. What an amazing sound - our child!

We'll have the "big" sonogram in about 3 weeks. And sorry to disappoint, we will not be finding out the sex! We will all have to wait!!

I'll update with some photos from Christmas and all. Just need Ry to upload...

Happy New Year! What a great adventure 2008 is going to be!

I'm on a board!!

One thing I've been especially drawn to is leadership positions in organizations. I was an officer in the many clubs I was in during high school and college (some of my unique organizations include the Penta Club - our high school math club - and Aggie Toasters - part of Toastmasters International). Yet, when you come out of college, you are often "too young" and "not experienced" enough to be on boards.

There are several I would love to be a part of. I would love to help in the development of the organization and play a role in its direction.

So, for the first time since college, I'm on a board!! I'm the secretary of DOVIA - Directors of Volunteers in Austin. It is a local organization that allows volunteer directors a chance to network, share ideas, etc. You can even check out my bio on the site - DOVIA.

I hope that this is just the beginning. As my life changes as our family grows, I hope I will still have the time (and energy) to assist other organizations.

starting to feel pregnant...

Well, yesterday I really started to feel pregnant.

First, my friend Katie let me borrow some maternity clothes. I have a few, and with her donation, I have doubled my wardrobe. I've read that you should raid your husband's closet, and his sweaters are quite comfy!

Second, while washing my hands, I ran into the sink. Guess my belly is a little bigger than before...

Third, while at Macy's finishing up our Christmas shopping, I had a hard time getting on the escalators. Seems like seeing my feet was a feat in itself!!

Now, this may be because I had a little "pooch" before, but Ry was gone for a week, and he says he can see the change!!

I think now that we are in our 2nd trimester (whoop!), I'm a little more comfortable with the pregnancy and will have Ry document my growing belly.

It's official...

We are expecting! Here's our little pumpkin, who is growing soo fast - now already at 3 inches! amazing!!

We are at 13 weeks, and hope to welcome the arrival of our little on at the end of June! Whoop!

trip down memory lane...

My uncle has been visiting us this past week. He is Tessa's godfather, so we made a trip to Aggieland. It was soo nice to be back!

We went to daily Mass at St. Mary's, and it was a different experience. 10 years ago I was a Senior at A&M, struggling to figure out what I was going to do with my life. I remember the fall semester well - what will I be doing after I graduate? Where will I be living? What is God's will in my life? Does he want me to be married? single? religious?

And I looked around. It was the Thursday before finals. Many of those (200 - 300 in attendance) looked the same. Such a time of discernment.

Here I am, 10 years later. Little did I know that I would have met my future husband a few months later. Little did I know that I would move around Texas and eventually make Austin my home. Little did I know who I would be today - a wife, mother, godmother, director, international traveller and more!

It was fun being in Aggieland. I have often wondered about going back to school. Now I firmly realize that that phase of my life is over - and I have the wonderful memories and friends to cherish that time. No need to relive it!

Logan talking about God...

A friend of mine Marcel posted this on his blog. It touched me, so I thought I would post it too!

Logan is a 13 year-old boy who lives on a ranch in a very small town in Nebraska. Logan listens to Christian Radio station 89.3FM KSBJ which broadcasts from Houston. Logan called the radio station distraught because he had to take down a calf . His words have wisdom beyond his years.

Bella

Well, a great movie comes out tomorrow - Bella. I had a chance to see a preview, and meet the director and lead actor. Very well done and a beautiful movie. We are hosting a screening with Texas Alliance for Life on Sunday (bought a big block of tickets), so if you are free, let me know and I'll email you the info.

It opens in several cities Friday, and the rest on Nov. 9.

my friend Dawn

I've been thinking lots about my friend Dawn. Yesterday was her funeral. It was beautiful - saw many friends from the Diocese and was able to catch up. Also, I was able to add some humor, asking them what do they think Dawn would have thought of her funeral. I bet she would have been suprised on a few of the faces.

I stared crying at the beginning and couldn't really stop. At one point, I almost forgot why I was there. It just doesn't seem real. I felt that Dawn was just hiding and was going to come through the door at any time. The Bishop made numerous references that they still do not know the cause of her death. That is hard - I feel many of us would have closure if we knew that.

These past few days have been very interesting. Dawn did not know that last Tuesday would be her last. Neither do we. I am trying to live as she did - in the moment. Provide love and encouragement to everyone I meet (and add a little cynicism here and there).

Dawn, I know you are heading up to see God now. We just miss you and the love and support you gave us! I know always wanted us to be pregnant together, so I ask that you intercede for us on this journey to parenthood.

with a sad heart...

It is with a sad heart that I share that my friend Dawn Faye Hogan Havalda died last week. Dawn and I worked together at the Diocese - I in the Youth, Young Adult, and Campus Ministry Office, she in the Stewardship office.

She was part of of a group of friends that I would have lunch with after I left. It was great to catch up, hear how the Diocese is doing, walk with her through her pregnancy, etc. I think my most touching memory was when I had my 3rd miscarriage in June. She didn't know what to do, but she said she could take me out to lunch. So, that is what we did. We just went and talked. She never dealt with infertility, but was there when I needed her. Just to give me a hug and listen. Boy will I miss her!

Please pray for her family (husband and 14 month old daughter), extended family, friends and co-workers. She leaves such a hole in our hearts. Her visitation is today and funeral tomorrow.

Dawn, we love you and we miss you!!

yea!

Well, Tuesday was a great day! We had our 15th Annual Benefit Dinner for Texas Alliance for Life, and it broke all the records! 820 people, records raised in the Silent Auction and with donations!

At the event, I was unable to speak with our keynote speaker and now presidential candidate, Dr. Alan Keyes.

On Wednesday, he invited us over for a chat, and it was amazing! We were with him for over 2 hours and had such a wonderful conversation! Even got my photo with him!

Now on to plan the next one!!

Wednesday, October 03, 2007

this week...

So, this week has been interesting.

First, we are getting ready for our annual benefit dinner. Lots of work! I think I have already put in my 20 hrs and it is only Wednesday.

Second, I have spent a wonderful time with our friends the G's (www.sharonandadam.com). Both our husbands are away, and they just added the 3rd child to their family 2 1/2 weeks ago. What fun has it been to be with a family full of children!! It has also assisted me in my discernment of our family. I have always had "my plan", and just hoped God would fit in.

Yet, as our desire for a family grows, we must look into other options. So, this week has taught me that babies are wonderful and beautiful, but older children have much to offer and bring so much love to a family too! Even more to think about!

Please pray for us as we discern how God is leading us.

the reason...

I have been trying to think of the reason why I haven't felt compelled to post.

I have wonderful friends who post quite often. I feel that I know exactly what is going on in their lives.

But, every time I think about posting, it is about something sad, something bad - like the due date of Mary Isabelle (our 2nd miscarried baby) was in August, we found out we had a chromosomal abnormality causing our infertility, Ry is travelling all the time and my big, crazy dinner is coming up next week.

I just can't seem to want to write about the good. Like beautiful new babies coming into the world - our god daughter Emma Sophia and good friend's Gianna Maria. Or that I has a great birthday and am excited about going to Aggieland this weekend.

Maybe I just needed to get this all off my chest. And maybe people will post a response. But is that what I want? Knowing people read this infrequent blog? Maybe yes :-)

I'll try harder!

thanks Brian, Darrell, and Tristan!

Brian, Darrell, and Tristan came down this past week from Toledo! We had fun showing them the sights of Austin, and the surrounding areas. From wine tasting in the Hill Country, to watching the sunset over Lake Travis, I think they saw some of the greatness Austin has to offer!

Hope they had a good time! They are probably almost home now - that 24 hours of driving does take awhile!

Thanks for visiting!!

a week (or 2 or 3) in review...

well, it has been a few weeks since I posted. Life has been crazy! Justin returned from Ohio with his wife Danielle, and they lived with us for a couple weeks until their apartment was ready. Wow, did I get used to someone else making dinner!

Also, I was honored to be on the team that put on our good friend Lorena's baby shower! We had a great time in Houston putting on the shower, and visiting some old haunts!

Then we came home, and hosted an Aggie Catholic party at our home. Fr. Brian Eilers has been transfered to Temple, so we had a good-bye party (and had some birthday cake too, since his birthday was the 4th).

Then we moved Justin and Danielle into their new apartment. Despite the loads of rain we've been having, it only sprinkled on us a bit. whoop!

Then this weekend we had the Texas Alliance for Life Dinner and Boat Cruise. It was for those who have raised over $500 (Cruise) and $1000 (dinner and Cruise). It was lots of fun, and for the first time in awhile, it didn't rain!

And lastly, Harry Potter #7 came out this weekend. We only have 1 book between us, so Ry and I are sharing. At least I won't be watching much TV this week...

Can't figure out how to link photos - I think our oh-so-cool new camera makes photos too big! Maybe my techie husband can figure it out!

Happy Feast of St. Bridget!!

thank you Justin!

Tonight is Justin's last night at our home as a "bachelor". Tomorrow he's off to Toledo to bring his beautiful wife to Texas, and in a couple weeks he'll be all moved out.

These past several months have been a wonderful time. I met Justin about the same time I met Ry, the summer of 1998. Justin even dated my good friend Lorena for a bit. I didn't get to know him very well then, and over the last 9 years I spent time with him just when we went to Toledo or they came here.

Over these last several months, I have gotten to really know this great man. From late night talks about spirituality, to protecting the house from those crazy people who like to play their music behind our house, to the extensive kitchen remodel I feel I've really gotten to know Justin, and in a way learn more about Ryan. Justin and Ryan met in middle school, and only lived in the same town for 4 years, until Ry moved to Texas. Yet, even with the distance, they have been best friends since.

So Justin, thank you for living with us! I will never forget this time! I think one of the best parts is having another person to cook for! We have our family here in Austin!!

As Ty Pennington says in Extreme Home Makeover, and now we say to you - "welcome home Williams family, welcome home!"

another beautiful soul...

It's with sadness that I write this...

About 3 weeks ago we found out that we were expecting our 3rd child. Last weekend I started having some complications and on Tuesday of last week we found out that our little one has returned back to our Lord.

Even though she was with us just a few weeks, she is greatly missed. I miscarried her at around 6 weeks.

I had strong feelings that it was a girl (as did my friend Robin), and we've named her Lucy Grace. Lucy, after St. Lucy, an early martyr and woman strong in her faith. Lucy also means light, and she brought light to our lives, knowing that we could get pregnant again after the miscarriage in January. Grace, for the grace we received in having her in our life. Now she is reunited with our Lord, and with her brother and sister in heaven.

Please keep us in your prayers. This week has been difficult for us. We also begin the hard road of further testing, both of me and of Ry. May the Lord provide us with guidance during this time.

4 New x 2 Meme

A friend from college (http://www.blairandsteven.blogspot.com/) did this meme on her blog. Looks interesting, so I thought I would try...

4 new things of the past 4 years

1 - 2 wonderful babies in heaven! We love you and we miss you Philip Gabriel and Mary Isabelle!!

2 - We have purchased our first home! yea! And put in lots of elbow grease in it these past few years!

3 -I've become a FertilityCare practioner. I love teaching, and working with couples to understand their fertility. Now just waiting for a baby to be named Alexis...

4 - Travelled to the southern hemisphere! Our great trip last year to Australia and New Zealand!! And a passport with my married name. Ry and I have also been able to travel to many other new places in the past 4 years!

4 desires for the next 4 years

1 - That we would be able to welcome our arms to our own baby (or babies). May God entrust us to a few little ones!!

2 - no more mortgage! We have been saving for awhile, and hopefully in the next 4 years we won't have to worry about that expense.

3 - for good health! that we can understand the cause for our fertility problems and be able to maintain a healthier weight!

4 - more travel! from going to visit our goddaughter (in New Zealand), maybe Europe, and hopefully more of the US.

I got my kitchen back!! yea!! We grouted and sealed this past week! yea! All that's left is some trim to do!! A special thanks to Ry and Justin, for all their hard work!!

We've got to show it off to my parents and sister who are visiting us for the Memorial Day holiday. Even have done some cooking in it too!! After 2 1/2 months without a kitchen, that's quite a feat!!

Now, what will our next project be...

the best of WDW

Well, I haven't posted much about our trip. Kinda seems like a dream now...

So, instead of all the details - here is my/our best list:

Best Roller Coaster - Expedition Everest (even got the shirt to prove it!)
Best Ride - tie between Tower of Terror and Mission Space
Best Night Show - Fantasmic at MGM
Best Mode of Transportation - the boats
Best Show - I loved the new Monster's Inc. Laugh Floor (a show that interacts with the audience - amazing), Ry loved the Lights, Camera, Action Stunt Show (race cars and motor cycles - and fire!)
Best Meal - our romantic dinner on top of the Contemporary Resort - great view (especially of the fireworks), free champagne (for our anniversary), and great food
Best Snack - Dole Whip Float (pineapple float) and Mickey bar
Best Resort I would wanna stay at - Beach Club (walking distance from Epcot, even have a sand-bottom pool)

It was an amazing trip! The weather was great, we didn't want to leave. The crowds and heat came the last day, so leaving that day wasn't as hard.

from death to new life...

Last night was a special night for Ryan and myself.

First, we went to the 100th Austin Area Aggie Muster. Aggie Muster is a wonderful Aggie tradition, to remember those Aggies who have passed away in the past year. It is recommended that if you lived within 100 miles of another Aggie, that you should get together and remember Texas A&M. I reminded them that Sean, my friend who was killed in Iraq in January, was from Pflugerville. When the read the list of those Aggies who have died, a friend or family member will say "here" for them. I was privileged to answer for him. He is gone but not forgotten.

While we were there, I got a call from my cousin Julie from New Zealand. She called again later that evening, and asked us if we could be her daughter's (who will be born in July) godparents. Of course!! yea! We were soo honored! It is also a Kiwi (probably by the Brits) tradition to have 2 sets of godparents. So, they have decided that 1 will be from the US, the other from New Zealand. How exciting!! The baptism will be in January, so we may heading down under again.

It was a great day! We also did lots of work in the kitchen - put in the countertops, doors, sink and dishwasher (or should I say the boys did). I did line all those cabinets... Check out the website for more info - Ry has updated the links so they should all work - www.alexisandryan.com.

a well needed vacation!

Well, I've decided to focus my energies on some fun stuff - like out upcoming vacation! Walt Disney World - here we come! Only 15 days away!

I've had tons of fun (Ry may think too much) planning out trip, making dinner reservations, and doing research. I think I read a guidebook in 1 day! I'm soo excited.

It has been 15 years since Ry and I both went. We went in June of 1992. I went in the beginning of the month (we left when my parents picked me up on the last day of school) and Ry went the end of the month.

There is tons of rides and stuff for us grown-ups! We are also doing the Cirque de Soile show, as well as a Segway tour through Epcot (my anniversary gift to Ry).

If you've gone recently, send me your suggestions!

And to those who think I'm not blogging enough, I'll work on that! Feel free also to comment :-)

now I join most other people...

in that I got my first speeding ticket yesterday! Yes, my first one!!

I got a parking ticket in 1994, when I parked on the wrong side of the road when I was going to high school. $15.

Then about 4 months ago I got a warning because I was driving at night without my headlights.

And yesterday, since it was Easter Monday, I was just driving to work, and there was no traffic. I came over a little hill on I-35, saw a motorcycle cop, and he caught me. I didn't realize the speed limit went down to 60. It did, and I was clocked at 75. I was in shock! Couldn't even plead my case to the cop - I'm going go work, didn't know the speed limit, this is my first time...

So, I can either pay the $200 ticket, or the $100 administrative fee and go to defensive driving. Defensive driving looks like a good option (doesn't go on my record). Now I just need to find a fun one! Anyone want to go with me??

a friend...

It has been brought up to me that we do not update our blog enough. Funny, I write lots in my head, just don't get around to typing them out. Just need to get around to that.

This week I had an interesting discussion with a friend. Being the good friend that she is, she pointed out some problems our friendship was having. For me, it was just easier to be mad at her, and at God. But, it has been eating me up, and probably not making me the easiet person to live with and be around. So I thank her for pointing those things out, and helping me become a better woman of God.

Isn't it great how God puts people in your life? Friends to support you, to help you on your walk, to assist you in carrying your cross. Friends also to challenge you, to point out weaknesses, and treasure your friendship enough to do that.

We are soo blessed! May we be given the grace to always realize that!!

the reason...

for not blogging recently is our recent home projects!

the end of February??

Wow, not doing too good on this blogging thing. It's like when I write in my journal, and when I write all I do is catch up on what's been going on, but not how I feel.

So, to briefly state what's been going on...

I've been trying to write about Sean. I think that is what got me stuck. I wasn't sure what to write. I wrote a reflection from the funeral for some Aggie friends, so you can read that below. I haven't even been able to muster the courage to look thru my old journals and photos.

February started off well. I went to one of those meal prep places the first weekend. It was soo much fun. I went with some girlfriends (thanks Paula, Kathy and Denise) and we made 12 meals. We are eating #11 tonight! It has lasted us awhile. The place is here in Austin (http://www.thestudiokitchen.com/) and the boys think it would be great to continue. All I have to stock is side dishes!!

Then we had Paula's baby shower. So much cute things for her little boy!! Despite what has gone on, the day went on much better than I expected and I am truly happy for her and her family.

For Valentine's Justin and I went to Chipotle. Yes, Ry was out of town. He was in Raleigh, NC for a business trip. And he got stuck there and had to be rerouted to Dallas to make it to our...

Marriage Encounter (http://www.ntexasme.org/) !! We did that a little over a week ago. It was amazing! What a wonderful time to refresh our marriage and focus just on us! I feel lately our marriage has had more stress, and this gave us the tools to deal with it. We had a wonderful time and a couple from the Austin area also attended.

Other than that Lent has started. I'm trying to include more Lenten traditions to our home. And trying to do more as a couple.

Ry is off today for Boulder. He will be back on Thursday. At least I got Charlie and Justin, and the wii!

More thougthts later...

reflection on Sean

Since many of y'all were joined in prayer for the repose of our friend Sean, I thought I would update you on the events the last 2 days.

Last night I attended the rosary. It was a beautiful liturgy, with readings, medals for the family, and stories. Some family,
Sean's flight instructor, and wives of buddies of Sean's in Iraq spoke. One of the most touching was a letter read by the wife of Sean's roommate in Iraq. He spoke about how Sean was so friendly and cheerful, carved pumpkins and put up Christmas
lights. And also how he grew his plants, and was even trying to grow some grass, even though the wind, birds, etc. were
against him. Lisa Morgan joined me at the rosary, and we also saw Nathan and Emily Swoboda, as well as many ags from his
outfit who we recognized.

The funeral mass was beautiful today. Bishop Aymond was the celebrant, with at least 5 other priests assisting. Gov. Perry
and Rep. McCaul were also in attendance. Bishop Aymond spoke of Sean's sacrifice, how when seeds are planted they are dead and then rise and bear fruit. And that is what he did! The wife of Sean's roommate also read an email her husband had sent her that morning. She said that the grass that Sean had planted had started to grow. It was 1 1/2 inches high. Even though he never thought it would grow, it has.

There were many Aggies (lots of Corps guys and gals) and members of our military. And the Church was full - and quite a
mix. People of all ages, races, and religions filled St. Elizabeth's.

When leaving the church there were members of the Corps lining the walkway to the parking lot. They stood at attention,
honoring our friend.

I did not go to the gravesite, but did watch the procession. It was lead by at least 35 members of the Patriot Guard
(www.patriotguard.org) who led on their motorcycles carrying Texas and US flags. Following that was over 100 cars in the
procession, and over 20 police officers both leading and guiding the group. Fortunately there were no protesters! It was easy to see how many lives Sean had touched and how much he will be missed.

I left a card with our spiritual bouquet for his family at the church, as well as a copy of what has been posted on the myfamily
site. In addition, some of you send stories about Sean to me, and I printed those off too.

I will miss my friend. And even though he is gone, he is still challenging me to be a better person. Thank you Sean!

too much stuff

Seems like the last couple weeks have whirled by. Here are the highlights:

1. Ice hit Texas! We had 3 days off work the week of MLK. We had fun just hanging at the house, but the boys did get a bit stir crazy... photos to come.

2. A good friend from college, CPT Sean Lyerly '98, was killed on Jan. 20 when the Blackhawk helicopter he was flying crashed in Iraq. He was 31, and left behind a wife and 3 year old son. I've been trying to think what I could write that would reflect the man that he was. Still working on that.

3. Lastly, my big event for work was this weekend - the Texas Rally for Life. The weather was perfect (clear, mid 60's), had great volunteers, and even had a few protesters. I feel at peace that it is over, now time to work on our next event.

I'm going to Sean's rosary tonight, and Bishop Aymond is presiding over the funeral tomorrow. I'm going to need to find some tissues.

recovering...

Well, these last few days have been great to help me in recovering. I thought I was good after 2 days, but God gave me 3 more! Due to the recent Ice Storm 2007, I haven't gone to work all week. It has been nice, catching up on some reading, writing, tivo, etc. We did get a little stir crazy tonight (and low on food), so we ventured out for some pepperoni rolls - and beer! yum!

I'll probably go in tomorrow. Looks like the roads will be better after 10. Still having a bit of pain here and there (quite intermittent), so I'll try not to overextend myself. It has been interesting how I have these last few days I have overextended myself - taking too long of a bath, walking around Sam's tonight, working with the laundry, playing pool). God quickly puts me back where he wants me - resting on the couch!

Ry made a cute movie of the snow and all. Maybe he can post it up here soon!

update...

Well, just and update on the latest progress. First, thank you for all your prayers (I know y'all read this blog). This has really been a difficult time, and I know your prayers have lifted us up and comforted us during this time.

We saw our doctor today, and my HCG levels (which were only increasing slowly), are now decreasing. The baby is just not growing as she should. I also have had no pregnancy symptoms, as I did have earlier in this pregnancy. We can either wait and have the miscarriage normally, or have a d & c. We have opted for the d & c, and that will be done this Friday at 12:30. If you could pray for us then, and for our continued health and fertility.

thank you again. may we be blessed to share some better news in the coming months!!

the new year...

Well, it has been awhile since my last post. So much has happened (Thankgiving, Christmas, our trip to the Grand Canyon, the baby).

Yes, the baby. Seems like our Advent gift was to find out that we were pregnant. When we got in for our first ultrasound 2 weeks ago, we were soo happy! We were 7 weeks, but the sac was empty. Over Christmas we waited for test results. Yea! They are going up! But not fast enough.

Yesterday we went in for our 2nd ultrasound. The baby is still growing, just not fast enough (currently sized at 6 weeks), and th sac is still empty.

Now we are waiting to see. If a miracle can start this baby to grow, or have a d&c to remove it. Not really how we wanted to start the year.

Yet, I can get pregnant! And hopefully it won't take 1 1/2 years between them.

Now, I plan to keep this updated, even if no one reads it. It helps me.

Many, many people have been praying for us and I am very grateful. May we be blessed with continued fertility this year!

Northwest

We got back last week from a great little jaunt to the Northwest. It felt like Texas - the weather was in the 100's. And no airconditioning - just a bit hot!

Went to visit our friends Ray and Elizabeth. Had fun seeing the sites in Seattle and spending time with my former roomie Andrea. Nice to spend time together, felt like just yesterday that they both were living in Texas.

Then we headed down to Portland to visit my uncle at the Brigittine monestary (http://www.brigittine.org/). We got there to celebrate the feast of St. Bridget of Sweden. Since the monestary is semi-cloistered, we were able to have the unique experience to speak with the other brothers. It was lots of fun!

We took Ryan back to Portand for his conference, and then I stayed at the monestary for a few days. What a wonderful and peaceful experience. I hope that we can make this an annual trip. It was so beautiful!

On another note, this is the week of my big birthday - the big 3-0! Wow, I can't believe it!!

Guess I should get better at updating this thing :-)

Just hope it cools down a little...

Exploring Auckland

Well, today is our last day. Carmel, Matt's cousin, was our guide. We went up the Sky Tower (http://www.skycity.co.nz/skycity/index.cfm?5FB84201-50BA-1DC3-6503-2FD86214423F) to have a view of the entire city. The craziest thing was there were parts of the floor that were just glass and you could look straight down. You could also bungee off the top, but that was a bit scary for us.

We drove around the city, went to the Greenstone outlet (where they sell jade). We also went to the wine store where Carmel works and got a few for our trip back.

Julie and Matt then took us to the airport. They had a 3 hour drive back home, so just dropped us off. We had a pretty uneventful trip, but had the new planes with our personal screens and video games. Finally got home at midnight and got back to the house!

What an amazing trip! We want to thank Julie, Matt, Christina and Damien who took their precious time off to spend it with us! It was a trip of a lifetime!! We have tons of photos, so you can check them out here: http://web.mac.com/ryandobson/iWeb/Main/Main.html. Also, Ry is working to consolidate our 4 1/2 hours of video. Not an easy task! Hopefully we will be able to share that with you too!

Te Pui

We went to the Maori Arts and Cultural Center (now known as Te Puia - http://www.nzmaori.co.nz/) in Rotorua this morning. The tour was very interesting, learning about how they lived, ate, etc. We saw them make totem polls and learned lots about their culture. They had a geyser, which was very interesting.

We ended with a show of the traditional Maori dances and songs, including the Haka. Even Matt was impressed.

Drove up to Auckland and went to Mass with Marie and family. The Mass was generally the same. It was very nice (but I was kinda tired). Tomorrow we leave :-(

Taupo and Rotarua

We got up early and headed to Taupo, on the other side of the lake. We saw the awesome Huka Falls! They were soo powerful and clear. It was beautiful.

We drove to Rotarua and saw the sulfer pools. Loved their beautiful color, but could do without the smell. We stayed the night in Rotarua that night.

That afternoon we headed up a gondula to see the entire city. Did couple runs down the 1st ever luge track. Very fun!

Relaxed that evening with Pizza Hut and a movie. One thing Julie and Matt miss in living so far from a town, that is something they miss. It was a fun night.

Lake Taupo

We travelled to Lake Taupo (about an hour) today to Matt's parents beach house. We took their great boat, the Panhandle (also their name for the farm) out on the lake, but it was quite choppy. The lake is actually a created as a crater from a volcanic eruption.

We rested at the house, then went to play miniture golf. It was the best golf I had ever been too. Each hole was a place in the area (ski resorts, hotels, etc.), so you had to go with a local person to explain it to you. Went to the mineral pools afterward. I stayed a little too long, and overheated myself. Found out that doing that isn't very uncommon. Had fish and chips for dinner, played some pool and another night of Clue!

The farm...

Julie and Matt took us to explore the farm today. In olden days, they used horses - now 4 wheelers!

We started by musetering a paddock. What this means is using Matt's very trained dogs and his calls to move the sheep from one field to another. It was a very interesting experience.

Had lunch with the Olds. That is how New Zealanders refer to their parents - Old Lady and Old Man. We stared with sauteed wild mushrooms that they had picked from the farm. And then had a yummy macaroni casserole.

Matt's parents Simon and Joanne took us on a tour of the farm. We saw the preserved rainforest (about 1000 of their 7500 acres). They also have a city farm of 500 acres (the nearest town is about 30 minutes away). We looked at their entire property from the highest point of their land. It was beautiful. We also heard lots of stories about my brother Steve throughout the day - Steve's pond, where Steve sheared the sheep, etc.

Julie then made us a traditional New Zealand dinner. A lamb roast (that Matt killed last week), potatoes, kumra (like sweet potato), carrots, brocoli, and wild mushrooms. Very good!

We brought Matt the game Clue, since we had fun playing it with him when he visited us. We taught it to his parents that night. I think they were a bit confused. Another great day!!

Waitomo "Glow Worm" Caves

We left early this morning (5:45 New Zealand time/3:45 Australian time) to head down to the Waitomo Caves. It took a couple hours, and the countryside was just like Lord of the Rings.

We got to the Rap, Raft n Rock (http://www.caveraft.com/) to check in. We had a small group, just us, our guide Marcus, and a Czeck guy named Marek.

We first donned our gear - wetsuit, jacket, pants, belt, boots, helmet and light. We then practiced abselling and abselled about 100 ft. into the caves. We hiked in the underground river and saw some glow worm caves. The "glow" is on the ceiling, as a byproduct of the larvae there (of a kind of spider/mosquito). When you turn your lights off, it looks like the ceiling is glowing (and so other bugs think so too, and are caught in the webs of the larvae).

We hiked, rafted, did a little spelunking, and ended with rock-climbing ourselves out (which was quite tiring since it was our last thing).

We drove to the "farm" that Matt's parents have. About 7500 acres with mostly sheep and some cows. Met Matt's parents and had some of Julie's great lasagna!

Tuesday, April 04, 2006

Goin' to New Zealand!

Today John and Gill took us to the airport. We got there early, did a bit of shopping, then headed down to the gate! They stayed with us and watched us get on the plane. So sweet!!

Took the short jaunt to Auckland and Julie and Matt picked us up. We stayed at Matt's aunt and uncle's place in Auckland. Michael and Marie are so sweet, and we got to meet the entire family. Since my brother Stephen lived for about 9 months in New Zealand, I am now introduced as Steve's sister, not Julia's cousin :-)

the beach!

So, for our last day in Australia, Christina took us to the beach! Here we come Sunshine Coast!!

We went to a cool aquarium called Underwater World. We learned about seals, otters, stingrays and all other kids of fish. They had a cool exhibit where you were on a moving walkway and the aquarium was on both sides and over you! so cool!

We then went to the beach and went in the water. It was great! Ry and I had so much fun, like we were little kids - jumping in the waves and trying not to get saltwater in our eyes.

John and Gill made us a traditional Australian dinner - lamb, pumpkin, potato, peas and carrots! It was yummy! We had pavlova for dessert (meringue with whipped cream and fruit). It was great! We sure are going to miss this beautiful place and wonderful hosts!! It has been so much fun!!

the Big Pineapple

Damien had to leave us today! His work called him to India for a business trip.

Christina took us to the Big Pineapple. It used to be a working pineapple plantation, with macadamia nuts, petting zoo and more. When we got there it looked a bit abandoned. After we spoke to a worker we found out that the land was for sale, and the owner was not doing any improvements. It was sad to see the empty fields where pineapples used to grow.

Luckily, since there were few people there, we were able to crach our own macadamia nuts and were one of the only ones on the Nut Mobile. It seemed a little like a family amusement park whose hey-day was in the 70s and 80s.

exploring around Brisbane

We went up into the mountains today and explored! Did some wine tasting (and brought a few back), had a great pizza, and went to a cheese factory and tasting shop.

Now, wine tasting is different in Australia than in the US. At home, you pick a few wines you wish to taste, and usually have to pay a fee. We tried (just a sip) of every wine they had on the menu! It was great (even though I got a bit tipsy)!!

Had Chinese tonight for dinner. Ryan has been craving it the entire vacation, so he got his wish!!

travelling back...

We left at 5 a.m. this morning to catch our flight back to Brisbane. That pretty much shot us for the day, we were quite tired.

Had John (Damien's dad)'s world famous fish and chips! They were the best we had on our whole trip!! Fresh fish, right out of the cooker!! yummy!

Exploring Cairns

Since you have to wait 48 hours after scuba diving to fly, we spent today exploring! We went to the local rainforest, the Daintree. It was very interesting - you walked on a catwalk through the forest (about half way up), they climbed a tower and saw the top of the forest, and walked back on the ground floor. It was great!

There was lots of rain, and we just missed it when we returned to the start.

We went into Cairns and went to the night markets. We walked around the downtown areas and found a local (not a chain) jeweler. His name was Mark and he was from New Zealand. He mines his own opals and creates unique jewelry. I got a beautiful opal, which I can't wear until my anniversary! And what a beautiful anniversary present it is!

Diving day!

We went snorkeling today on the Great Barrier Reef. We went out to one of the far out reefs, so it took over an hour to get there. The weather was a bit choppy, so we are thankful Christina and Damien brought sea sickness medication.

We donned some wetsuits and went out at the first stop. The waves were choppy, and we were kicking hard to get to the reef about 10 meters behind the boat. Only, when we looked up, we were beside it. The waves had pushed us backward.

We didn't stay out the whole time at our first stop, but the subsequent ones were increasingly better. It did rain a bit, and it was funny to feel it on my back and look down and see the beautiful coral and various fish. It was an awesome experience. Ry did great for his first time snorkeling! It is just amazing what you can see. Christina and Damien also enjoyed their scuba diving.

By the end of the day, we sure were tired. It takes lots out of you! But tons of fun!!

Off to Cairns

Today we caught an early flight to Cairns. Since Christina and Damien travel lots, we had breakfast in the Quantas Club. Nice to see how the other half lives...

Once we got to Cairns, we went and saw the Mossman Falls and did some walking through the jungle area on a walkway about halfway up (kinda high for me). We then went to Port Douglas and found our little 2 bedroom condo. Very cute!

Had dinner at a place called Mango Jam - had mango daquiris and mango salsa on my pizza. yummy!

Australian Zoo

Christina had to work today, so Damien was our tour guide for the Australian Zoo. The Zoo is owned by the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. We saw a cool show about snakes, tigers, birds and crocodiles. We also petted kangaroos and koalas! We actually walked thru their exhibits.

Had an Aussie BBQ for Gill's birthday. A few different foods than a Texas BBQ - pumpkin, eggplant, and even eggs in addition to steak and chicken.

Rugby!

Ry went to Mass for the first time outside of the US, and was surprised how similar it was. We talked with the priest and he'd even been to Texas!

Then went to our first Rugby game - the Brisbane Broncos vs. Sydney Eels. It was a hot day, but we had a great time. We had front row seats, which were awesome. Ate the traditional meat pies and drank cold beer. The game is also quite quick - 2 40 minute periods with a 20 minute halftime. And they don't stop the clock! It was even more exciting that the Broncos won!!

We're in Brisbane!

We arrived in Brisbane at noon on Sautrday! Christina and Damien met us at the airport, and we went downtown. We saw both of their offices and did a walking tour of downtown. Even had fish and chips on the river! Lastly, we saw Christina and Damien's property where their house will be built.

Christina and Damien live with Damien's parents (John and Gill) now as their house is being built. They made up a comfy room for us to stay there. Damien's sister Katrina also lives with them, so we made a full house!

the journey begins

Our journey began with the Super Shuttle picking us up at 3:20 today. Our flight left at 6 from Austin, then we connected at the crazy LAX airport. Then flew to Auckland! 12 hours passed quickly - the food was yummy, service great, and we actually slept.

Had a few hour layover in Auckland and made it to Brisbane.

Olympics

This week I have been wondering what I can watch on tv. I have been glued to the Olympics for th past 2 weeks. I saved the closing ceremonies for a couple days, just to extend my fix. I just love the Olympics, especially the winter ones. With the winter Olympics, it is more than just a test of strength and will, but a test of the elements. We cannot control nature.

In 3 weeks we will be in Brisbane. I'm getting a little excited - have started my preliminary packing! Have a few more presents to buy, but we are getting it done!

Happy first Sunday of Lent!

update

Well, it has been too long since my last post! I was thinking no one was reading it until Christina (in Australia) told me her husband has been checking it out! Well, I should post more!

Christmas was great - spent time with both sides of the family! Had New Year's at our house, and made some mean Cuba Libre's! yum!

Work is coming along, enjoying the job! Had our first big event this weekend, the Texas Rally for Life (www.texasallianceforlife.org). It was a great success despite the early rains (which we soo needed!).

Guess I will write more "thoughts" later! Gotta get the gumption to ask for time off for our vacation! More on that later...

Promoted?

Promoted already?

Well, I have truly enjoyed my last week at TAL. The work is going great, and the people are wonderful. The funny thing is that my position has already changed.

First, my position was Director of volunteer Development and Event Planning. Kinda long, but interesting. Now my new title is Director of Community Development. I think it encompasses even more!! Anna will be so proud (my friend who is passionate about community development).

So, I guess we will all have to wait until next week to see if this sticks, or we change again!

On another note, we had a great trip in PA to see Ry's family! It snowed!! Photos coming soon!!
